Expert close-up and parlour magician, Dr Taliesin, is one of the few Australian magicians to have been made a member of the Magic Circle (London) – one of the oldest, most exclusive and prestigious magic societies is the world.
His Edinburgh Festival Fringe debut show, Classic Conjuring, premiered in 2018 with glowing audience reviews from the sell-out crowd. Equally at home on stage and with smaller gatherings, Dr Taliesin has performed for over a decade at private and corporate events, birthday parties and charity fund-raisers, to major events including the Art Gallery of New South Wales' annual Contempo Christmas party.
In 2018 Dr Taliesin also became one of the only people in the world to be awarded a PhD for studying magic and magicians. As a magic historian and theorist, he has lectured at the Magic Circle’s London Headquarters, and his writings have appeared in the journal of the Association of International Magic Spectators, and Half Half Man’s scholarly journal, The Quarterly (forthcoming).

From the magician’s desk - at the Edinburgh Fringe 2018
In this age of ‘ghost written’ blogs and tweets (none of that here, thank you very much), I wanted to personally take a moment to say a big thank you to everyone, and in particular all the audience members, who helped make the premiere of my show Classic Conjuring a great success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2018. Thank you!
Of course, although the Fringe comes to an end (be among the first to hear about my next show by clicking here), alongside performing one of the delights of being at the Fringe is the chance to see other performers. For raucous fun, it was hard to go past Japanese comic mime/magician duo Gamajobat (a brilliant performance which left the entire theatre convulsed with laughter for nearly a whole hour), while father and son, Gyles Brandreth and Benet Brandreth, each in their very different one-man shows, delighted with their comedic wit and remarkable story-telling ability.
At the Fringe: Dr Taliesin with Gyles and Benet Brandreth
Gyles Brandreth’s Break a Leg took audiences on a delightful, personal and extremely funny journey through the stories of the colourful (and notable) characters who inhabit the world of show business. Definitely more for adults, Benet Brandreth’s A Hero for Our Times, was a comic tour-de-force skilfully leading his audience on an interactive and surreal narrative, featuring everything from love lost, Russian literature, and the dreaded ramekins. All are shows definitely worth keeping your eye out for as they begin to tour.
